Spike island has a rich and vast history that involved all sorts of characters. Such as, sinners and saints, captains and convicts, rioters and redcoats, monks and monasteries. As the largest convicts depot in the world during the Victorian times, the 24 acre fortress has been a host to the 6th century monastery in the last 1300 years.
Nowadays, fort Mitchel, the star shaped fortress that became a prison that can hold over 2300 prisoners, has dominated the island.
